O meia, "um gigante em campo", ajudou seu clube a conquistar três títulos de campeão inglês, em 1954, 1958 e 1959.
Flowers jogou 49 partidas pela seleção da Inglaterra. Em 1966, escolhido por Alf Ramsey, não chegou a participar em campo da conquista inglesa em casa, mas foi recompensado com a medalha de campeão em 2009.
